cackling at the mention of cacklebean eggs. having worked in a bougie cafe which sold cacklebean eggs, i can't count the amount of time people asked me what a cacklebean egg was.

thank you Karl! Unusual topic for me (possibly more relatable than the bad gigs if we're honest)

Well, perhaps. But I’m a sucker for all your stuff.

Cackling much like those bean eggs.

Loved it! Pretty sure I will accidentally remember this sales pitch (cacklebean eggs. Fresh pasta, MADE DAILY) until the next part comes out because it was such an engaging read. I think I identify as a Felix-you hybrid.

Thank you Jane, that's kind of you to say. Also, I really like Felix (as a writer, not massively in person) so I'm glad you do too.

“I treated a hot bowl of pasta as many people treated pubs and alcohol, that is as a direct route out of this terrifying, paralyzing little thing called reality.”

Yep. Same.

Loved this and can’t wait for parts 2 & 3!

thank you Lindsey! Quite relieved to have found a fellow foodie there (alcohol turns me into quite a hysterical moodie)

Oh, Rosana, this is great writing. Absolutely word perfect.

"I can tell that Jack has not encountered a day of true suffering in his life, and I instantly dislike him for this reason." ( me too)

"...it’s too early in the morning for tragedy." ( but this afternoon, for sure)

"If someone was going to shoot me from behind at any point in my life, this would’ve been perfect timing." ( I know the feeling well)

Okay! Got it. Fresh pasta made daily with posh cacklebean eggs. Sold!

Oh Sharron. I'm not sure I can live up to such a lovely comment but thank you so much. Particularly appreciate knowing which lines did it for you (I agree, afternoon time is perfect for tragedy). Also, glad to hear you also dislike Jack. Thought I was being harsh, truth be told.

I have to second Sharron’s votes for outstanding delivery of prose! So glad I found you Substack!

Thank you Linda! That really makes me quite happy to hear. I'm not going to stoop so low as to ask you which bits incited the laugh (although I want to know) but will simply thank you for reading.

the fact that 'the worst kind of elf' exists, implies there is a best kind of elf. I am town between many (the toy makers ? house elfs? fantasy elves?) but I think the best elf is Thranduil.

You are right, that is implied. I did not think of that and am definitely not able to answer that question but you clearly know more fictional elves than me!

I’m hooked - pasta! I could eat pasta for every meal with sauce or butter. I actually learned to make sauce & the best meatballs from my Italian MIL (well ex MIL) yet I have never ever heard of a cacklebean- is it a bean that cackles? Or an egg that cackles like a chicken?

I will need to google this and then make some pasta …bye bye cholesterol numbers. Excellent writing BTW!! ❤️

ha ha Pamela, the cacklebean will remain a mystery. Pasta is great, I'm more of a sauce-addict than you by the sounds of it. Thank you for reading :)
